I do tend to look at things from the practical side of the problem. I love Stonehenge, I think its beautiful and iconic but if it was a dual purpose celebratory symbol it would have approaches from east and west and it doesn't! Therefore, since my first, and only, visit to it I could not for the life of me figure out why I would go to all that trouble just to walk away from the thing I had come to see and celebrate! The only way it worked was not to look at the sunrise and to use the shadows of those assembled being printed, momentarily, on Stonehenge itself.

It still didn't make sense to have a big celebration in the middle of summer though because the farming aim is to produce as much food as possible - stopping halfway through the year and eating your crop - animal and vegetable - is neither sensible or, in some cases, possible! For example - my apple orchard has trees loaded with apples but if I were to go out and pick myself a basket of them with the express purpose to eat them at this time of year we all know where I'd end up! Pass the toilet roll time!! :)
